— In a statement on Wednesday, President Barack Obama warned that “the actions of those in power can have a chilling effect on free speech and the rule of law.”
The president added that “there is a time for all of us to stand up for those who are oppressed, including those who suffer racial or religious discrimination.”
While acknowledging that there have been instances of violence and hatred directed at protesters, Obama said, “there are also times when we must stand up and stand up with our fellow Americans.”
